Auto Translate (LibreTranslate)

About

This plugin adds automatic translation to Payload 3.x collections and globals. When an editor creates or updates a document in the source locale, an afterChange hook pushes the document onto an in-memory queue. A worker then sends the translatable strings to LibreTranslate and writes the results into each target locale. Drafts can be translated without being published, as long as the collection uses versions. The plugin walks each document's localized fields and skips anything that is not text, along with fields you exclude per collection or globally. Lexical rich text is handled at the AST level: the translator changes text leaves and leaves headings, links, tables, and custom blocks in place. Arrays and blocks are merged rather than overwritten, so copy that a human already edited in a target locale is kept, modified source copy is updated, and new blocks are appended. Blocks with a different blockType are not mixed together. Slug translation is optional. When enabled, it builds a URL slug from a source field such as title, expands German umlauts, strips accents for Latin-script languages, and falls back to an ASCII slug for non-Latin locales when latinLocalesOnly is set. A custom slugify function can replace the default. The package also ships a standalone CLI and a DatabaseCrawler that read PostgreSQL tables directly to backfill existing content, which requires the Postgres adapter and the pg package. Translation requires a reachable LibreTranslate instance, and an API key is optional. Output quality depends on LibreTranslate, and strings that come back unchanged can be retried with an optional fallback setting.
